Exploring the Timeworn Valleys of the Roosevelt National Forest

Hidden away in the depths of northern Colorado lies a majestic expanse of mountainous terrain—the Roosevelt National Forest. Here, towering peaks, abundant wildlife, and breathtakingly beautiful vistas can be experienced as far as the eye can see. The forest is also home to a number of timeworn valleys, providing visitors with unforgettable experiences.

As Piney Lakes Begin the Adventure

An adventure into the Roosevelt National Forest should begin at the fascinating Piney Lakes. The lake area has a history that can be traced back to 1885, when the forest was still in the possession of the U.S. government. Here, visitors can see a variety of remarkable views from the shore, such as towering rock cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and breathtakingly lush valleys. In addition, the lake provides the ideal environment for fishing and other recreational activities to be enjoyed. Furthermore, the roads and trails that form a network around the lake offer a great many opportunities for exploration.

The Unforgettable Valleys of Pawnee

Continuing eastward from Piney Lakes brings visitors to Pawnee, a wide and expansive valley offering some of the most stunning views in the entire Roosevelt National Forest. The valley is a part of the National Park system, making it a place of great serenity and natural beauty. Stretching up above Pawnee are the Spring Creek Peaks, which at 12,468 feet provide the highest elevation in the Roosevelt National Forest. Further along the valley, visitors may also notice a number of historic mining sites, many of which still hold considerable amounts of coal, iron, and gold.

Vacation on the Mirasol Plateau (Or Nearby Valleys)

Nearby the Pawnee Valley lies the Mirasol Plateau, a plateau that serves as yet another impressive area within the Roosevelt National Forest. Unlike the valley below it, the Mirasol Plateau consists of flat stretches of land that lead up to a number of mighty mountain peaks and allowing unparalleled vantage points to be admired. Furthermore, many of the valleys around the plateau—such as the Colorado River Valley, the Las Animas County Valley, and the San Isabel Mountains Valley—provide explorers with a never-ending list of varied views to enjoy.

Surrounded by the Spectacular Medicine Bow Range

In the south of the Roosevelt National Forest lies the Medicine Bow Range, a stretch of hulking mountains older than the nearby Rocky Mountains. Here, visitors can take part in an array of activities, including hiking and backpacking through the range’s renowned trails, or camping at one of the area’s many beautiful campsites. On top of the range, parts of the area have remained mostly undisturbed for many years, providing a unique glimpse into untouched nature.

Unforgettable Scenery throughout the Valleys

The Roosevelt National Forest is home to numerous adventures, activities, and sights, but the most memorable experiences are to be found in its timeworn valleys. From the Piney Lakes to the Medicine Bow Range, the Roosevelt National Forest offers unforgettable views of stunning landscapes and majestic wildlife—all of which can be experienced in the comfort and safety of this majestic nature preserve.

Nowhere else in Colorado can visitors find such an abundance of beauty and discovery in such a tranquil setting—and with so many hidden treasures to explore, an adventure into the timeworn valleys of the Roosevelt National Forest is an experience that will be remembered for a lifetime.
